May 19, 2007 - We started out from the Flying J truckstop at 255 and IL 15. Today was another of those... "hey where's that go?" days...

Out in the middle of some of the metro east's "twisties" is this old church

A coin toss to decide which way to go first... "call it Mo"...
BTW... this is the first appearance of the new chapter patch

After some twists and turns... and a little of the areas best bar-b-que at Bully's Smokehouse in Columbia we were off down Levee Road... yeah it runs along the levee almost all the way to Prairie Du Rochere...
speaking of which... here we are at one of the most popular stops along any riders river road tour

Next stop... Modoc and the ferry...

This pilot was really amazing... fighting the current all the way across and then turning back at the last minute

An excellent shot of my excellent friends Mo and Sam...

Here's some other riders from the St Louis area coming across from the Missouri side..
We saw them again a little later with bike trouble and stopped to see if they were OK...
their answer was "it's a Harley..." nuff said...

Now to head south to Fort Kaskakia park

Time for a stretch and a butt-fluff.... before exploring the Pierre Menard home at the park

The servants quarters

The "block house" the most secure structure on the site... used like a fort if the residents were attacked by Indians
In the foreground on the left is the "summer kitchen"... rather than cooking in the house this allowed the meals to be prepared without heating up the house

The end of the house... with another view of the "summer kitchen" to the right

Inside the "summer kitchen"

A 3-holer... with one just for the little ones...how thoughtful

the "summer kitchen" and gazebo

Time to roll on... "since we're so close anyway... let's go on down to Chester and see Popeye"

When we got there, the big guy was home...
but then again why wouldn't he be.. he's bronze

"We gots to have our spinach" for the ride home

Jim never seems to meet a stranger... we ran into a a couple and their son from Dupo... the son just got his license today and they were out riding to celebrate... they had come down the Missouri side and were headed back up Rt 3 for home... that's a long way to go for lunch (Reed's Harvest House n Chester)... but when you love to ride.. it's not really so far

No trip to Chester would be complete without running across the bridge... even if it is just to save a little on gas

Once again it was time to head back up Rt 3... yeah... Ruma, Red Bud, Waterloo and Columbia...

Another "excellent adventure" exploring Southern Illinois
